Curb Your Enthusiasmconcluded in 2024 after its twelfth season,It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiais still going strong after 20 years and 17 seasons, andThe Simpsonsrecently had its contract renewed, so it will run at least until Season 40. All this is to say that when a comedy series hits its straps and lands with its desired audience immediately, there’s no limit as to how long it can go for.

Unfortunately, that opportunity was never made available to these short-lived series, with each of them being prematurely axed after just one season despite their strong writing, terrific performances, and, most importantly, their noteworthy comedy prowess. Ranging from decades-old series that now serve as cautionary tales about canceling shows too soon to hidden gems from more recent times that are destined to become cult classics in their own right, these 10 series never saw a sophomore outing, and television is worse off for it.

The Witchfinder

10’The Witchfinder' (2022)

Created by the Gibbons Brothers

Written and directed by theGibbons Brothers, who are the comic geniuses behind the 2010 return ofSteve Coogan’s hilarious Alan Patridge character,The Witchfinderis a brilliantly nuanced dose ofrazor-sharp yet goofy British comedy. Set in the 1600s as the English Civil War rages on, Gideon Bannister (Tim Key), a bumbling, chauvinistic, and pompous self-proclaimed “witchfinder,” escorts suspected witch Thomasine Gooch (Daisy May Cooper) across East Anglia to face a trial that could forever change both of their lives.

Granted, the story is rather lean, barely able to stretch across its six-episode run, but within the historical premise, the piercing possibility for thematic playfulness, and with the sensational talent on display,The Witchfindercould easily have evolved into one of modern television’s great comedies with follow-up seasons. The BBC canceled the series in 2023 despite its earlier episodes getting solid ratings, putting a swift end to the show’s potential to evolve and expand.

7’The Grinder' (2015–2016)

A clever satire of courtroom dramas and the personalities within them, one that is laced with plenty of gleeful absurdity and a happy knack for subverting genre tropes,The Grinderis a playful legal-comedy that soars on the back ofRob Lowe’s lead performance. Despite its undeniable charm and the fact that it quickly assembled a devoted fanbase, the series was axed after just one season, leaving viewers longing for more of its imaginative storytelling, its expertly crafted comedy, and its enticing dare to be different.
