Over time, television and streaming services have delivered a good amount of post-apocalyptic shows – the most recent one beingThe Last of Us, an already-beloved TV series based on the fan-favorite action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Filled with a bunch of emotional and action-packed scenes, the post-apocalyptic HBO series is a total hit so far, fascinating both general audiences and critics.

Although the new series is trending right now, there are actually many more TV shows of the genre that may appeal toTLoU’s audience. Ditching the obvious recommendations apart (like the globally appreciatedThe Walking Dead) here are a few post-apocalyptic TV shows that Redditors believe viewers should give a shot.

Now that the first season of fan favoriteThe Last of Us, one of the most anticipated shows of the genre, is officially over (not to worry, asecond season ofTLoUis secured), fans may be naturally wondering what to watch next that will fill the void. Luckily for them, Reddit has got everyone’s backs. FromThe RaintoJericho, these are some of the best apocalyptic shows out there, as well as arguably the most underrated.

15’The Rain' (2018 - 2020)

Like many other apocalypse TV shows, 2018’sThe Rainalso resorts to the brutal-virus-wipes-population type of premise. In the Danish series, which was created byJannik Tai Mosholt,Esben Toft Jacobsen,andChristian Potalivo, audiences are introduced to a group of survivors as they attempt to find a cure and stay away from an evil organization responsible for creating the deadly sickness.

On the platform,torn-ainbowmakes a point to highlight that the viewing experience is so much better in its original language: “Watch in the original Danish with subtitles. The [English] dub was distractingly bad, but the performances (especiallyAlba August) shine in the original audio.”

14'12 Monkeys' (2015 - 2018)

Inspired by the classic blockbuster and set in the year 2043,12 Monkeysrevolves around a time travelernamed James Cole (Aaron Stanford) from a post-apocalyptic future who appears in the present day (2015) on a quest to locate and destroy the source of a deadly epidemic that will eventually extinguish mankind.

“Had to scroll way too far to see this. Just got done with a full rewatch today. 13’Snowpiercer' (2020 - 2023)

Taking place abroad the Snowpiercer train seen in the 2013 movie of the same name (and set seven years after the world becomes frozen all around), this captivating spin-off series starringJenniferConnellycenters on the lives of a few survivors who inhabit the moving vehicles.

12’Utopia' (2013 - 2014)

A group of people who meet online finds a mysterious, rare manuscript of a graphic novel — one that seems to hold mysterious answers and predictions to events both past and present. However, soon enough, they find themselves being tracked down by an alarming organization known as “The Network.”

“Utopiais so amazing. I loved it so much I made my own merch for it because I couldn’t find much of anything,” aRedditorsays. “SO sad it was canceled, it deserved so much better.” While there is no clear reason why the show has come to an end, there were likely not enough people tuning in forUtopia, which led the underrated show to its premature finale.

11’From' (2022 - )

In the post-apocalyptic horror dramaFrom, audiences are introduced to an intriguing concept: a mysterious and nightmarish city in the middle of the U.S.A. that quickly traps everyone who attempts to enter. In the meantime, residents attempt to survive the threats of the forest and search for a way out.

It’s clear how Redditors feel about this underrated series;betsy78is one of the people who can’t help gushing overJohn Griffin’s creation. “It is on [Epix] it is so flipping good and I can’t wait till next season comes out but I haven’t heard anyone talk about it,” the user wrote. “This show was so good and creepy. 10’The Last Man on Earth' (2015 - 2018)

Set in the aftermath of a virus that wiped out most of the human race in the year 2022,The Last Man on Earthcenters on Phil Miller (Will Forte, who also created the series), a sad and lonely man who travels the United States, Canada, and Mexico in his RV while he attempts to find other survivors.

A very engaging blend of comedy and drama,The Last Man on Earthis, of course, one of thefunniest and most refreshing apocalypse shows. “Sure it was comedy but it was a decent show,“randomnightmarewrote. Additionally, it was described as “a nice wholesome comedy” by anotherRedditor. No doubt, this entertaining show is guaranteed to surprise audiences.

9’See' (2019 - 2022)

The big-budget Apple TV+ seriesSeestarsAquamanandGame of ThronesactorJason Momoa, and it is set in a dystopian future. As the title suggests, the poignant twist in the series is that humanity has lost its sense of sight and therefore found new ways to survive. However, all this is put to the test when a set of twins are born capable of seeing.

In addition to its compelling narrative, theSteven Knightseries is also incredibly well executed. “Highly underrated and not talked about,” aRedditornoted on the website. “I’m finding it a really interesting premise. Momoa and Bautista are great too,” anotherReddit useradded.

8’Colony' (2016 - 2018)

Set in the near future, this intriguing show takes the core element of thebest alien invasion movies, where a family fights in order to stick together in a new world order. Through the series, they find themselves facing complications and making difficult decisions to survive a Los Angeles that has been occupied by outside intruders.

Many Redditors seem to be disappointed that the show never got picked up despite how good it is.Jurassic_boombasticis one of the many people who mentioned “Colony” when Reddit asked for underrated post-apocalyptic show recommendations. “Really good show,” anotherRedditoradded.

7’Survivors' (2008 - 2010)

Survivorscenters around a group of people who strive to survive the repercussions of a terrible viral pandemic referred to as “European flu,” which infects and kills 90% of the world’s population by weakening the human body’s immune system quite by a lot.

OneRedditorhighlights how the series is “written really well” and many seem to agree. According toMGD109, what’s so good aboutSurvivorsis how it takes “a look at a lot of the honest issues that would occur in a post-apocalyptic society, that most shows brush over.”

6’Jeremiah' (2002 - 2004)

StarringLuke PerryandMalcolm-Jamal Warneras Jeremiah and Kurdy, the sci-fi action-drama seriesJeremiahis, like many other TV shows mentioned here, set in a post-apocalyptic future where a virus has wiped out most of humanity decades prior. Jeremiah heads on a quest to relocate to a mysterious place that his father mentioned: Valhalla.
