Sandra Bullock’s1998 fantasy romancePractical Magicis arriving on Hulu on August 22, 2025, almost ayear ahead of its highly anticipated sequel. The cult-favorite film follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, played by Bullock andNicole Kidman, who are born into a magical family but have sworn off witchcraft. However, the sisters are soon forced to use their powers tofight off a curse that threatens their bloodline.
The film was met with an underwhelming response upon releaseandgrossed $68.3 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million. Over the years, though,Practical Magichas gained popularity among fans of the genre. Warner Bros. took toX(formerly Twitter) in May 2025 to announce the sequel, and confirmed that both Bullock and Kidman would be reprising their roles.Practical Magic 2is set to hit theaters on June 09, 2025, withBullock and Kidman serving as producersalongsideDenise Di Novi.
Practical Magicdebuted on HBO Max back in October 2024and has remained a popular title on the platform since then. Alongside the Bullock-starrer,Hulu is adding a wide range of critically acclaimed and fan-favorite titles to its August lineup. HBO’s Failed Attempt at Reviving ‘Practical Magic’ With a Prequel Series
Years beforePractical Magic 2was confirmed,HBO Max had planned on expanding the franchisewith a prequel series titledRules of Magic. The show was announced back in 2019 and was set to follow the Owens family’s earlier generations. As reported byPEOPLE,Rules of Magicwould’ve taken place in New York City and tell the stories of Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens as they discover they come from along line of powerful witches.
Based onAlice Hoffman’s novelsPractical MagicandRules of Magic, which inspired the original film, the prequel aimed to dive deeper into Sally and Gillian’s ancestors. However, despite the project generating early buzz, it never materialized beyond the pilot stage. In another interview withPEOPLE, however,Kidman shared that she and Bullock were happy to give their fans the follow-up they have been waiting forwith the upcoming sequel.
On July 10, 2025, Kidman took toInstagramto share a video of herself and Bullock hugging each other on the set ofPractical Magic 2.“The witches are back,”she captioned the post while sharing that they were officially back on set to film the sequel.PEOPLEhas also confirmed that the upcoming film featuresStockard ChanningandDianne Westreprising their roles as Sally and Gillian’s aunts. New additions to the cast includeJoey Kingas Sally’s daughter, alongsideLee Pace,Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, andSolly McLeod.
Practical Magicwill be available to stream on Hulu starting August 1. Its upcoming sequel hits theaters on July 14, 2025.
