20th Century Fox has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming psychological thrillerA Cure for Wellness. The film marks a return to smaller scale filmmaking for directorGore Verbinski, who helmed the first threePirates of the Caribbeanmovies and, most recently,The Lone Ranger. Based on an original idea by Verbinski and screenwriterJustin Haythe(Revolutionary Road), the film starsDane DeHaanas an ambitious young executive who is sent to the Swiss Alps to retrieve his company’s CEO from a mysterious “wellness center.” At the remote location, he soon realizes the spa’s treatments are not what they seem.
This looks like one hell of a creepy horror-thriller (“creepy af” as the kids say), and while the trailer doesn’t really delve into the story, it sells the film’s atmosphere wonderfully. Before Verbinski helmed the terrificPiratestrilogy (Dead Man’s ChestandAt World’s Endare good and I will fight whoever says different), he made a name for himself with the J-horror adaptationThe Ring, which is one of the scariest films of the last two decades. He knows his way around this genre, and while he’s been working in the big-budget adventure realm for quite some time—with a fantastic new Western classic calledRangothrown in for good measure—I’m mighty excited to see Verbinski back in the horror lane. Count me in.
