TheJack Black-led video game adaptation is already the highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office after passingCaptain America: Brave New World, and it has its sights set on becoming the highest-grossing video game movie ever. However, ifA Minecraft Moviewants to passThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, it still needs to add around $630 million to its total, which could be a long shot as things are starting to slow down.
A Minecraft Movie, which also starsJason Momoa, kicked off its box office run with a forceful $162 million domestic debut, and another $150 million internationally to lift its global total over $300 million after only one weekend. The video game adaptation came in right afterSnow Whiteand saw to it that Disney’s live-action movie stood no chance of earning back its budget.A Minecraft Moviefollowed that up with a 52% drop during its second weekend in theaters, but this was still enough for it to earn another $78 million at the domestic box office.
