Thanks to directorGil Junger, we’re getting our first real heap of intel surrounding the upcoming10 Things I Hate About Youfollow up, and it sounds… incredibly unhealthy. Recently speaking withEntertainment Weekly, the filmmaker, who helmed the iconicHeath LedgerandJulia Stiles-led original film, teased the new project, which is titled10 Things I Hate About Dating. Although the “vibe” will be the same, Junger said that the storyline will veer off from the movie that came before it and will, instead of taking on aWilliam Shakespeareclassic as the 1999 movie did, modernizeMolière’s 1666 play,The Misanthrope. But it’s the description of “not a rom-com,” but “a trauma-bond com” that has our eyebrows raised about the film’s content and overall message.
Walking us through Mollière’s piece, Junger explained it as, “a play about someone who is repulsed by high society and glamor and everything that’s fake and flashy.” Chiming in,Naya Elle James, who is co-penning the script alongside Junger, revealed the main characters to be “a brutally honest podcaster” and a “polished dating coach” whose paths will cross during a couple’s retreat. Laying out the primary plot, James continued,

“[He’s] a man who’s critiquing society, and he wants to withdraw and not be a part of it. But he’s very much a part of the machine of social media and creating controversy. And she, on the other hand, is very polished, and she’s proclaiming authenticity. But there’s a lot of lies that she tells herself in order to believe in her own message… They both have to be humbled, and they both have to come to terms with their own hypocrisy.”
‘10 Things I Hate About Dating’ Will Be Its Own Thing
Don’t expect to see any familiar faces when10 Things I Hate About Datingmakes its way into cinemas. Junger has already put his foot down and said that Stiles’ Kat won’t be making a cameo of any sort in the upcoming feature, explaining,“I intentionally did not want to reflect back to the original movie because Heath is dead. I just thought it would be kind of sad.”In addition to the late, great Ledger and Stiles, the original film also featured plenty of other teen heartthrobs of the time, includingJoseph Gordon-Levitt,Gabrielle Union, andAndrew Keegan. Including zero legacy characters will certainly give the new project a tougher time getting off the ground, but if it’s a success, Junger already has a plan in mind that would see two additional movies to follow.
As of right now,10 Things I Hate About Datingdoesn’t have a release date, but stay tuned to Collider for more information.
