Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have released a new trailer for the upcoming sequelThe Divergent Series: Allegiant. Directed byRobert Schwentke(Red) and based on the third and final novel of theDivergenttrilogy byVeronica Roth,Allegiantfinds Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) attempting to survive their first-ever trip outside the wall that encloses the world’s futuristic/post-apocalyptic Chicago. There, shocking truths await them, revelations that will force them to make difficult choices and sacrifices in the name of saving all of humanity. WhileAllegiantis the final book in the source material’s trilogy, the producers have opted to expand the film franchise to include a fourth installment titledThe Divergent Series: Ascendant, which will conclude the sci-fi series in 2017.

Divergentwas a totally serviceable adaptation of a totally serviceable dystopian sci-fi book. Unfortunately, the follow up,Insurgent, was a barely watchable mess. TheAllegianttrailer looks promising enough. It’s extremely trope-y (“you’re theonlyone”…sigh), but it’s opening up the world and the story in an exciting way. The major concern is the two-parter approach, which, as we saw withThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, tends to lead to a feature film-length first act.
