As Marvel Studios gears up for its 37th film,Avengers: Doomsday,Kevin Feigeis getting candid about what it all means. Speaking to, among others, Collider’sSteve Weintraubat a recent roundtable forFantastic Four, the Marvel boss confirmed thatDoomsdaydoesn’t just mark another epic crossover— it’s the beginning of something new.

“It [Fantastic Four] is kicking off Phase Six, for people who keep track of such things, which comes to a close inSecret Wars, andit very much is certainly the most focused phase. I mean, we’ve had it all already, and it’s all in the works.”

WithFantastic Four: First Stepsserving as the launchpad for Phase Six andSecret Warsclosing it out, Feige made it clear that this next chapter of the MCU has a tight game plan — unlike the transitional years afterAvengers: Endgame. And yes, for those wondering about the long-rumored multiverse shake-up involvingEarth-828(home to the Fantastic Four and their First Steps), it’s a major piece of the puzzle. But Feige insists it’s entering the picture.

“It fits in a tremendous amount. And I think about it less about Earth-828 than I think about it asJohnny and Ben and Sue and Reed and Franklin fitting into the world to come, and the storylines to come.”

That’s a nod toFantastic Four: First Steps, which officially introduces Marvel’s First Family into the MCU. AfterThunderbolts*arrived and received acclaim for its character-driven approach, the stage is being set for a more grounded, character-driven approach, echoing the way comics constantly reboot and reorient themselves for new readers.

“Anything that is considered a jumping off point is good. That is how the comics have kept going for 85 years. I hope that’s how this — our 37th movie — keeps going.”

Kevin Feige Says Doomsday Marks a Fresh Start for Marvel

And ifAvengers: Endgamewas a conclusion,Doomsdayis the opposite. Feige made that distinction clear, explaining thatEndgameleft Marvel wondering, “Where do we go from here?” What followed was experimentation in format, tone, and story structure. ButDoomsdaysignals the return of long-term storytelling and a plan with a definitive shape.

“UnlikeEndgame, which really was an ending… we used it to experiment, and we used it to evolve, and thenwe used it to expand — too much.Secret Wars, as in the comics, is as much about bringing certain storylines to a close as it is launching a new one. And that’s what’s very exciting: already being well into development of the next saga.”
