Afterbreaking a long list of records in its first weekendat the box office,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicetook 68% plunge in its second frame, one of the biggest ever drop offs for a marquee superhero title, grossing a total of $52.4 million domestically. The number is slightly up frominitial estimates, which put the film at a 70% drop-off. Even so, it’s the fifth biggest dive for a movie that opened over $100 million, topped only byHarry Potter andThe Deathly Hallows Part 2and three of theTwilightfilms. The drop is about on par with last year’s Fantastic Four, which plummeted 68.2% in its second week. But if that’s the bad news, it comes with some good.

Zack Snyder’s epic superhero smackdown also hit an impressive $682.9M at the global box office, which means it has officially surpassedMan of Steel’s total global haul of $668M after only two weeks in theaters.Batman v Supermanhas also outgrossedThor: The Dark World(644.6M),Iron Man 2(623.9M),Iron Man(585.2M), andBatman Begins(374.2). Now the big question becomes if the film will follow in the shoes of Warner Bros’Dark Knightsequels and demonstrate enough stamina in the coming weeks to pass the billion dollar mark.

Batman v Supermanalso easily swiped the top spot at the box office again, but notably faced a very light slate of competition. Indeed, it was another repeat contender that landed the No. 2 spot, as the unsinkableZootopiaearned an impressive $20M in its fifth week, bringing its domestical haul to 275.9M, and putting it well on its way to becoming the 10th ever animated film to earn more than $300M domestically. At the international box office,Zootopiascooped up another $30M, bringing the global total to 787.6M.

The rest of the weekend lineup was generally lowkey. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2showed some endurance, landed the third spot with an estimated gross just over $11M for its second weekend. A pair of faith-based features round out the Top 5, withGod’s Not Dead 2taking the fourth spot with $8.1M in its debut frame, but failing to surpass its predecessor despite opening in 1,639 theaters. TheJennifer Garner-ledMiracles from Heaventook the fifth spot with $7.5M, bringing its total to $46.8.

In other noteworthy stats,The Divergent Series: Allegianttook the No. 6 spot with $5.7M, which brings its domestic total to $56.4M – a number that means it took three weeks for the sequel to earn as much asDivergentdid in its first weekend.  In the indie realm, Paramount debutedRichard Linklater’s spiritual successor toDazed and Confused,Everybody Wants Some!!, in 19 theaters to a total of $323,000 for a $17,000 per screen average, while Sony Pictures Classics debutedDon Cheadle’sMiles DavisbiopicMiles Aheadin four theaters to a total of $122,751 for a $30,688 per screen average.
