Tyler James Williamshas definitely become more of a household name after taking on the role of Gregory Eddie on ABC’s hit comedy,Abbott Elementary. He won a Golden Globefor his work on the series andhas nabbed three Emmy nominationsso far.Long before his success onAbbott Elementary, however, Williams had already begun carving out an impressive career for himself. As a youngster, he starred in the sitcomEverybody Hates Chris, and laterwent on to appear as Noahin the AMC zombie show,The Walking Dead. But there’s one series on Williams' resumé from back in 2019 that fans might not even remember.
‘Whiskey Cavalier’ Is a Fun, Fast-Paced Spy Romp
Whiskey Cavalieris a short-lived series that never quite got the love it deserved,a hilarious spy thrillerthat just so happens to nail a perfect blend of comedy and drama. Even though it was canceled after one season, the series is still definitely worth a binge-watch today just to check out Williams' range. The show follows FBI agent Will Chase (a perfectly castScott Foley) who goes by the code name Whiskey Cavalier. He’s a spectacular agent who is very good at his job, but has recently experienced a bad break-up and is somewhat incapacitated by it.
Eventually, Chase is assigned to partner up with CIA operative Frankie Trowbridge (Williams’Walking Deadco-starLauren Cohan), who is the very definition of no-nonsense. The two mustgo on missions to save the worldfrom various international baddies, and they recruit a team of people from all different agencies to work together. There is plenty of heart-pumping action, some very cute flirting between sweet Will and the spiky Frankie, and some seriously stunning locales. The spies are taken all around the world, and the series has no shortage of interesting and unique backdrops for all the subterfuge and fight sequences that take place. Of course, there’s somewill-they-won’t-they energybetween the two leads, which makes the storylines even more fun.

Tyler James Williams and His Co-Stars Shine in ‘Whiskey Cavalier’
Williams plays NSA analyst Edgar Standish, providing a lot ofWhiskey Cavalier’s comedic relief as the nerdy, straight-laced character who is an essential part of the team. Whether Standish is requesting more field experience (he hates being left out of the action and often asks to carry a weapon), orskillfully hacking into enemy technology,Williams portrays Standish with a goofy lovability and a charisma that helps make the analyst such a silly, yet kind character. Although Gregory might be sort of suave onAbbott Elementary, Standish has no game whatsoever. Williams nails his eagerness, which allows him to steal every scene he’s in.
Even though Williams is one of the best parts of the series,Whiskey Cavalieralso boasts an extremely talented ensemble. Foley and Cohan play wonderfully off each other, andtheir chemistry makes the series even more compelling. There are also several outstanding supporting actors, such asAna Ortiz(Ugly Betty),Josh Hopkins(Cougar Town),Dylan Walsh(Nip/Tuck), andOphelia Lovibond(Minx), who help create a charming framework for a series that prides itself both on its humor and its edge-of-your-seat adventures.Collider noted that the seriesis a “sleek throwback to buddy-cop series,” andthe cast is able to create a lighthearted, flashy vibe that provides viewers with a thrilling ride. Even though he’s part of an ensemble, Williams' performance is essential in makingWhiskey Cavalierwork.

The series aired its final episode on July 28, 2025. Several weeks prior,Foley posted a video on Instagramsaying that the show would not be renewed for a second season.ABC noted that declining ratings were behind the cancelation, and it’s true thatWhiskey Cavaliernever seemed to find its audience while it was on the air. Although there was a slight uptick in ratings after Foley’s post and a campaign to save the series on social media, showrunnerDavid Hemingsonconfirmed later that ABC’s decision was final. Luckily for Williams, the cancelation of the series allowed him to become a part ofAbbott Elementary, which first premiered at the end of 2021. Even though it didn’t last long,Whiskey Cavalieris perfect for anyone who loves the spy thriller genre with a comedic twist, or anyone who wants to see Williams take on an entirely different character than Gregory Eddie.
