Steve is currently at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, and he managed to snap a photo of the promo poster for theBlade Runnersequel. Unfortunately, details on the project are being kept so under wraps that this doesn’t even provide the official title for the film (although it would be amusing if they called itThe Blade Runner Sequeland just left it at that).
Ridley Scottwas originally going to direct the sequel, but his schedule became too packed and the reins were eventually handed over toSicariohelmerDenis Villeneuve, who will be working from a script byHampton Fancher. Villeneuve will also be reteaming with hisSicarioandPrisonerscinematographerRoger Deakins, so at the very least,Blade Runner 2is going to look amazing.
As for the cast, the film starsRyan Gosling,Harrison Ford,Robin Wright,Dave Bautista,Ana de Armas,Slyvia Hoeks,Carla Juri, andMackenzie Davis. Other than Ford reprising his role as Deckard, we don’t know who is playing what roles, or how they factor into the plot, because all of those details are being kept secret. The film is a mystery at this point, and we’re all going to have to live with that until sometime until 2017 when they presumably start releasing trailers for this thing.
So what will the sequel explore? That’s anyone’s guess at the moment. The thing about the originalBlade Runner(and the reason I find it to be kind of an infuriating film) is that it’s all style and very little substance. What substance there is you’re bringing to it as a viewer. Does it matter if Deckard is a replicant or not? How does affect the theme of the picture? What is the theme of the picture? If it’s just “What does it mean to be human,” it’s pursued in a very cold, distant manner. Scott got wrapped up in the visuals of his picture, and it’s those visuals that stand the test of time, not so much the story.
Hopefully, Villeneuve can find an interesting angle on the picture. In the meantime, enjoy this promo poster for the flick. TheBlade Runnersequel opens June 04, 2025.
