Directed by former Pixar chiefJohn Lasseter, the movie earned mostly positive reviews, and is currently sitting at a 74% score on the aggregator websiteRotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the website reads, “Carsoffers visual treats that more than compensate for its somewhat thinly written story, adding up to a satisfying diversion for younger viewers.” Despite its relatively underwhelming box office performance,Carsfamouslygenerated over $10 billion in revenue through merchandise salesalone. Its sequel,Cars 2, grossed over $550 million worldwide, whileCars 3underperformed with around $380 million globally.
