It isn’t unusual for fans to re-watch all the older movies in a franchise before the arrival of a new installment. If they can do it for the sprawling Fast and Furious franchise, they can certainly do it for the two-film-deep 28 Days Later series. The franchise’s long-awaited third installment,28 Years Later, is just around the corner.Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the original28 Days Lateris experiencingan uptick in interest on home video. Starring the Oscar-winnerCillian Murphy, the original film was directed byDanny Boyleand is considered something of a genre-defining classic.

It introduced the world to “fast zombies,” which was simply mind-boggling to witness back in the day. It seemed like Boyle and writerAlex Garlandweren’t merely toying with the rules of the zombie genre, but were actively setting them on fire. It was alsoone of the earliest mainstream studio movies to be shot entirely on video(not film).28 Days Laterwent on to become a cult classic, grossing over $80 million worldwide against a reported budget of $8 million. It was followed a few years later by a sequel,28 Weeks Later, directed byJuan Carlos Fresnadillo. The second film was also a critical and commercial success.

Although Boyle didn’t return for28 Weeks Later,he’s back in the director’s chair for the upcoming third movie, which will be followed by a direct sequel,28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed byNia DaCosta. According to JustWatch data,28 Days Laterwas among the most popular movies on streaming platforms on June 9. It finished fifth, behindThe Accountant 2,Predator: Killer of Killers,Sinners, andStraw.

‘28 Years Later’ Is Due Out in a Few Days

28 Years Lateris slated for a theatrical release on June 20 and featuresJodie Comer,Aaron Taylor-Johnson,Jack O’Connell, andRalph Fiennes. Produced ona reported budget of $75 million, the movie is projected to gross over $30 million in its domestic box office debut. Boyle’s last film wasYesterday, which was released six years ago. Garland, on the other hand, has been busy with his directorial career, having made last year’sCivil Warand co-directed this year’sWarfare.
