Deadlineis announcing that Paramount has removed Bad Robot’sGod Particle, the expected next film in theCloverfielduniverse from the 2017 Paramount schedule. Elsewhere, an unnamedCloverfield IMAX Moviehas been added to the Paramount release schedule for June 12, 2025. Are these the same film? And, if not, when will we get to seeGod Particle, which was previously scheduled to come out in February 2017? Are Paramount andJ.J. Abramstrolling us? Let’s break this down…
In October, we announced thatGod Particle, an under-the-radar science fiction movie directed byJulius Onahand starringDavid OyelowoandGugu Mbatha-Raw, would be the next film “connected to” theCloverfielduniverse. Like10 Cloverfield Lane,God Particleseemed to be more of a spiritual successor to the 2008 monster flick rather than directly connected, following the story of a team of astronauts who make a “terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.” Furthermore, via a report fromThe Wrap, we learned that Abrams and Paramount were aiming to release a newCloverfieldmovie every year, crafting a loose, shared cinematic universe.

Just a few months later,God Particlehas been completely removed from the schedule (for now), and a new unnamedCloverfield IMAX Movieset for the end of the year. This could mean one of a few things: 1. They are the same movie, andGod Particlehas been pushed back until the end of the year and potentially renamed. (This seems more likely.) Or 2.God ParticleandCloverfield IMAX Movieare two separate films, andGod Particlewill be rescheduled somewhere else on the Paramount schedule shortly, or perhaps for 2018 as to stretch out the Cloverfield Shared Cinematic Universe. Either way, Paramount is effectively keeping us guessing.
Regardless, what does this mean for the October 2017 release schedule? WithCloverfield IMAX Moviescheduled for October 27th, October 2017 is looking suitably Halloween-y, withFriday the 13th,Insidious 4, and a newSawfilm all dropping that month.Saw: Legacyis also scheduled for an October 27threlease, while the other horror films hit earlier in the month. In other franchise news, theKingsmansequel is alsoscheduled to drop that monthon October 6th, after being pushed back from a Summer 2017 release.
In addition to Oyelowo and Mbatha-Raw,God Particlealso starsElizabeth Debicki,DanielBrühl, andChris O’Dowdand will be made from a screenplay byOren UzielandDoug Jung.
