The movie follows a college student, Jeffrey Beaumont (MacLachlan), who returns home after his father has a stroke.Things take a turn when he discovers a severed ear in an abandoned field. He then teams up with a detective’s daughter, Sandy Williams (Dern), to solve the mystery. They believe the ear belongs to beautiful lounge singer Dorothy, who may be connected with the case. Soon, Beaumont finds himself becoming drawn into her dark, twisted world, where he encounters sexually depraved psychopath Frank Booth.
