For the first time in more then three decades, the DeLorean is coming back. The iconic car fromBack to the Futurewent out of production in the early ‘80s, but thanks to the efforts ofStephen Wynneand his DeLorean Motor Company, a Humble, Texas-based company that has been refurbishing these vehicles in years past, new cars are going into production.

DMC has been operating since 1987, and they acquired the rights to reproduce parts in ’97. Last year, their court battle with the widow ofJohn DeLoreanwas settled and the company earned the rights to use its name, logo, and trademarks. But this latest step is a big one. It marks the first time new DeLoreans will be manufactured on American soil.

Speaking withClick2Houston, Wynne said:

It’s fantastic. It is a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen. That was a green light to go back into production. That was prohibited. It was against the law to do it.

As noted byComingSoon, about 6,500 DeLoreans still remain out of the 9,000 that were ever produced. With this new development, Wynne says DMC will build replica 1982 DeLoreans under a low volume manufacturing act with enough materials to make about 300 of them. While you can purchase refurbished models for between $45,000 and $55,000, Wynne says he hopes to sell the new models for less than $100,000. According to a statement posted toDMC’s Facebook page, the company “has been working for some time to identify a supplier for engines and other parts that must be reproduced to allow production for 2017.”

To no doubt reassure fans of the original model, Wynne added:

There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car. As we go into the program, we’ll decide what areas need to be freshened up.
