Since everyone is rebooting everything these days, why not something that actually deserves some good closure?Gilmore Girlsit is! No, seven seasons was not enough, and if you watched the last two then you know why. In its heyday,Gilmore Girlswas a fantastic, delightfully witty, and incredibly emotional series fromAmy Sherman-Palladinothat starredLauren Graham(Lorelai),Alexis Bledel(Rory), andKelly Bishop(Emily) as three generations of Gilmore women, starting at a time of big changes in all of their lives. And the world needs more of it!
According to Palladino, who is writing the 4-episode Netflix series with husband Dan, the three starring women will all be back, along with series regularsSean Gunn(Kirk),Keiko Agena(Lane), and of courseScott Patterson(Luke). But over the last few months, we’ve been getting a few teases here and there ofGilmore Girlsscoop (click the links for full interviews), and thanks to that, here is everything we know so far:
— The series, set eight years from the Season 7 finale, will take place over4 episodesthat will be 90 minutes each, and will be tied to the seasons: Winter, Summer, Spring, and Fall. Palladino says she would prefer they not all be released in a single day, but she hasn’t talked to Netflix about the release schedule yet.
— The series will be titledGilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
— The death ofEdward Herrmann(Richard Gilmore) has definitely been weighing on the cast and creators, and the show willdefinitely be addressing it.
— Even though Palladino was not involved in the show’s 7th season, she won’t pretend it didn’t happen. The revival will take place at a new turning point in the lives of the women, but the past will not be forgotten.
— The production is working on bringing back several of Rory’s key love interests, likeJared Padalecki’s Dean,Milo Ventimiglia’s Jess, andMatt Czuchry’s Logan, depending on their availability. Palladino notes that in the revival Rory is currently dating, “as anyone with that face would,” though not married.
— Early on there was some drama (or it seems more like miscommunication) about whether or notMelissa McCarthywould reprise her role as Sookie St. James. It seems like ultimately, Palladino assumed McCarthy was just too busy and thought she couldn’t do it (and was told she was too busy by her reps), while McCarthy said she was never asked. But it’s all been sorted now, with McCarthy letting fans know,I’m so excited!It’s going to be amazing."
— Just because the show is on Netflix doesn’t mean fans should expect the F word to suddenly appear. Palladino explained that the characters talk the way they talk, and that’s not going to suddenly change.
— Kelly Bishop teased some fun things for Paris (Liza Weil), saying “These scripts are good. They’rereallygood. And bringing back all of those characters is so delicious. Paris is a hoot. It’s unbelievable what Amy has written for Paris. People are going to have so much fun with it.”
— Bishop alsospokeabout how much the show means to her: “I would dry up and blow away like a leaf. This show is sodeeplyimportant to me, on so many levels.”
— The series will now end with a “final 4 words” that Lauren Graham said will be repeated, and therefore an exchange. Although what they are and who they are between remains a secret (probably between Rory and Lorelai, of course, but let the speculation begin!)
— Fans shouldexpect to get the closurefrom the revival they want and deserve. Warner Bros. Television President and Chief Content Officer Peter Roth said, “Amy is now able to finish, appropriately, properly and I think with great satisfaction, the show the way itshouldconclude.”
— According to Lauren Graham onEllen, as of May 20th they have almost wrapped shooting, so expect some news to come (like a premiere date?) soon.
