Awards season took another leap forward today as the 2017 Golden Globe nominations were announced. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the love around, but the season’s three biggest contenders—La La Land,Moonlight, andManchester by the Sea—all had big showings in the major categories, so not any surprises on that front. If anything got a boost from the Globes—and really they don’t havetoomuch of an impact on Oscars beyond simply raising a film’s profile—it’sMel Gibson’s war dramaHacksaw Ridge, which scored major nominations for Best Picture, Director and Actor. Elsewhere, the indieHell or High Wateralso performed swimmingly, picking up notices for Picture, Screenplay, and Supporting Actor.
As the Golden Globes have a separate category for “Comedy or Musical” it offers them the opportunity to highlight some films and performances that may not make the Oscar conversation, likeColin Farrellfor Best Actor inThe LobsterorHailee Steinfeldfor Best Actress in the critical darlingThe Edge of Seventeen.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is the total shutout ofMartin Scorsese’sSilence. It’s unclear if the film just wasn’t ready in time to screen for the HFPA or if they just simply didn’t like it, but the faith-driven drama was left off the entirety of the Golden Globes shortlist. They did, however, take a liking toTom Ford’sNocturnal Animals, a film that’s been frustratingly sidelined despite some stellar performances and terrific direction from Ford. It’s nice to seeAaron Taylor-Johnsonrecognized for his supporting turn, and one hopes he and/orMichael Shannonaren’t forgotten when it comes to the Oscars.
The nomination I’m most happy about? That’d beSing Streetfor Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. It’s one of the best films of the year, hands-down, and The Weinstein Company completely botched the release so it unfortunately reached precious few people in theaters this past spring.
On the TV side, the HFPA loves to be a “king-maker” of sorts, singling out brand-new TV programs for its top awards. That was certainly true this year with lots of love for NBC’sThis Is Us, Netflix’sStranger Things, and HBO’sWestworld.
