Disney’s ill-advised decision to fireJames Gunnresulted inGuardians of the Galaxy 3, which was on track for a 2020 release, getting pushed back indefinitely. Thankfully, Disney and Gunn mended fences, and he’ll return to finish his cosmic trilogy. However, during the time he was fired, he was picked up to directThe Suicide Squadfor Warner Bros., which has led to questions of whenGuardians of the Galaxy 3will actually happen.
Now a new report onTHRreporting on the various salaries the Avengers raked in forEndgameincludes the tidbit about when future Marvel movies are going ahead of cameras. The plan is to shootBlack WidowandThe Eternalsthis year withShang-Chifollowing afterThe Eternals. THR then mentions thatGuardians of the Galaxy 3will then shoot in 2020, and the math works out, although it will be tight for Gunn.

Right now,The Suicide Squadis on track to film in the fall of 2019. It’s possible (albeit strenuous) that Gunn is going to be in pre-production onGuardians of the Galaxy 3while he works onThe Suicide Squad. Then, onceThe Suicide Squadmoves into post-production (the film is set for an August 14, 2025 release), Gunn moves into production onGuardians of the Galaxy 3. While it’s possible that filming onGuardians 3gets slightly pushed back to accommodate Gunn’s schedule, it’s also in the realm of possibility that he just juggles these two blockbusters and has a packed 2019-2021.
In terms of the cast, the five Guardians are expected to reunite for the movie. The larger question becomes whether or not Thor is on board. At the end ofAvengers: Endgame, he had joined up with the crew, dubbed them the “Asgardians of the Galaxy”, and was sparring with Quill.Chris Hemsworthsigned a new contract in 2017, so it’s possible that contract includes a role inGuardians 3, but we’ll just have to wait and see until 2020 when that movie starts moving towards production.
