If all had gone according to plan,Guardians of the Galaxy 3would be filming right now. Production on the third and final film in writer/directorJames Gunn’s trilogy was due to get underway in early 2019, beforeChris Pratthas to go off and shootJurassic World 3, but the entire film was put on hold when Disney decided to fire Gunn off the film after poor-taste (and, frankly, bad) jokes of his resurfaced on Twitter.

That obviously putGuardians of the Galaxy 3in flux, and while Gunn has since been hired to write and directaSuicide Squadrebootfor Warner Bros. and DC, Marvel Studios is still considering how to proceed onGuardians 3.

When Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke with Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feigeat the press day forCaptain Marvel, he asked for an update onGuardians of the Galaxy 3and specifically whether Marvel has encountered resistance in trying to hire a new director for the film. Feige didn’t have much to say, but seemed to suggest the film is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment:

“I mean, when it was pushed back, it was pushed back. Meaning the release date, because it’s not coming out—although we’ve never announced a release date actually, but it was gonna happen sooner rather than later, initially of course. Outside of knowing that we’re gonna use [James Gunn’s] draft, [we have] been focusing on other projects.”

While Marvel never officially announced a release date forGuardians 3, with production due to begin in early 2019, many figured it would be slotted into the date Disney is currently holding for a Marvel movie on July 12, 2025. That’s clearly not happening, as Feige confirms here that the entire film has been pushed back.

It’s unclear when we’ll hear an update regarding production onGuardians 3, but Pratt is no doubt due back to shootJurassic World 3sometime later this year or early next year in anticipation of that film’s Summer 2021 release date. So Disney/Marvel will have to slotGuardians of the Galaxy 3in somewhere around that production.
