The newHarry Potterseries for HBO Maxis officially deep into production, and acclaimed Brazilian cinematographerAdriano Goldmanis pulling back the curtain on what to expect visually from thelong-awaited adaptation. Goldman—best known for his work onThe Crown,Andor, andJane Eyre—serves as thelead director of photographyon Season 1, whichwill consist of eight episodes. That’s a welcome clarification after weeks of rumors speculating the season would be a shorter six-episode run. In reality, Goldman confirmed that he’ll be responsible forhalf the season himself—specifically, the first two and final two episodes—while two other DPs are working alongside him.

This inaugural seasonis being described as “monumental” in scope, both in terms of story and production. “It needs to establish a whole universe: scenarios that should last many years, all being created now,” Goldman explained in a recent interview withForbes Brazil. With a projected seven-season plan ahead, the pressure is on to define theHarry Potterseries' entirevisual identityin just these first eight episodes.

To do that, Goldman and his team undertook a massive18-week pre-production phase, where the visual tone, sets, and look of the world were rigorously crafted. “This is the part I consider most rewarding,” he said. “Collaborating from the origin of the project… this joint elaboration of visual content allows a broader collaboration between talented professionals from various areas.”

A major shift fans can expect is amore vibrant color palette—a departure from some of the grimmer or muted tones often used in the previous film adaptations. “I have a special relationship with color,” Goldman noted. “This series needs to be more vibrant from the global point of view of the image.”

Harry Potter Will Rely on Practical Effects

But don’t expect this visual vibrancy to mean heavy reliance on digital effects. Quite the opposite. Goldman emphasized thatpractical effects will be prioritized over CGIwhenever possible. “Many of the solutions we seek are carried out on camera, and not with computer graphics,” he explained. The production has already involved extensive discussions around how to use natural elements and photochemical techniques to create the illusion of magic.

As for his future with the series? Goldman confirmed that he’s open to returning, depending on how the project unfolds. “There is a prospect of seven seasons for the series,” he shared. “I don’t know if I’ll be in all of them, but there’s certainly a long journey ahead.”
