It’s thesecond-highest-grossing installment of the fan-favorite franchise, having beaten the lifetime global haul of the original animated film, and the series' third installment. It now trails onlyHow to Train Your Dragon 2, whose own remake is already slated for a 2027 release. The movie isinching closer to the $600 million markat the worldwide box office, reestablishing the audience’s faith in live-action remakes of animated hits, after a string of big-budget films underperformed in recent years.
With $250 million domestically and another $338 million from overseas markets,How to Train Your Dragonhasgrossed a cumulative total of $589 million worldwide. The movie has most recently passed the lifetime global hauls of past hits, such as theJason Statham-ledThe Meg,Christopher Nolan’sDunkirk, the Pixar hitBrave, fellow DreamWorks blockbusterPuss in Boots, andSeth MacFarlane’sTed. This weekend, it also surpassed the $582 million lifetime haul of Disney’sTangled. With a reported price tag of $260 million,Tangledis the most expensive animated movie ever produced; incidentally, a live-action remake of the movie wasrecently shelvedbecause ofSnow White’s failure.

Directed byDeanDeBlois, who co-directed the original film withChris Sandersand helmed its two sequels solo,How to Train Your Dragonopened to mostly positive reviews. It holds a 77% score onRotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Crafted with loving fidelity to the animated classic by original co-director Dean DeBlois,How to Train Your Dragondoesn’t best the first iteration but still reaches enchanting heights of its own.” Audiences gave the movie a near-perfect 97% score on the aggregator website, while Collider’sMaggie Lovittdescribed itas “the gold-star example of how to do a live-action remake right.”
