Having completed a month of release, directorJames Gunn’sSupermanhas firmly established itself amongthe 100 highest-grossing movies in domestic box office history.Supermandebuted to positive reviews as the inaugural film of the newly-launchedDC Universe, a successor to the divisiveDC Extended Universefounded byZack Snyderover a decade ago. WhileSupermanhas outperformed Snyder’sMan of Steeldomestically, it trails the film on the global front. That said, the movie overtook another superhero blockbuster on its fifth Friday of release, as it aims to conclude its run with more than $350 million in the bank.
With $325 million domestically so far,Supermanhas overtaken the $324 million lifetime haul ofDeadpool 2. Released in 2018, the movie served as a sequel to the 2016 blockbusterDeadpool, which reignited starRyan Reynolds’ career, and emerged as one of the most successful R-rated movies in history. Directed byTim Miller, the originalDeadpoolwas a long time in the making, and was produced on a relatively lean budget of $55 million. But creative differences with Reynolds led to Miller dropping out of the sequel, which was helmed byDavid Leitchand produced on a much higher reported budget of $120 million.

Deadpool 2earned positive reviews, and is currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Though it threatens to buckle under the weight of its meta gags,Deadpool 2is a gory, gleeful lampoon of the superhero genrebuoyed by Ryan Reynolds' undeniable charm.” The movie also featuredJosh Brolinas the fan-favorite character Cable, who didn’t return for the third installment,Deadpool & Wolverine. Produced on a reported budget of $200 million, the movie made over $1.3 billion worldwide. The odd-couple energy that Reynolds shared with Brolin inDeadpool 2was replaced with the love-hate relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine in the third film, which made a rather pointed reference to Cable’s absence. In a moment of meta humor,Reynolds joked that audiences didn’t really like Cable, which is whyhe wasn’t brought back.
Gunn Tried to Rope Reynolds Into the DC Universe
Before starring as the Merc with the Mouth, Reynolds played Green Lantern inthe infamous DC film.Gunn jokingly askedif he’d be willing to return as the character in the DC Universe, to which he received a pretty unambiguous response. Gunn’sSupermanhas grossed over $560 million worldwide, and should be able to pass the $600 million mark this weekend. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
