The History of Soundfollows the story of Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), two young men who set out in the middle of World War I on a mission to record the sounds of their American compatriots—their voices, music, lives, and anything they can get their hands on. Over the course of a short-lived period, both men discover not only the epic sweep of the United States, but also things about themselves, leaving them deeply and forever changed.

O’Connor boards the project shortly after his Emmy win forThe Crown, in addition to boarding another wartime period piece,Lee, which follows the life ofVoguewar correspondentLee Miller, starringKate Winslet. Mescal, who recently won a BAFTA winner forNormal People, joins O’Connor following his recent starring role inMaggie Gyllenhaal’sThe Lost Daughter, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and starred O’Connor’sThe Crownco-starOlivia Colman, as well asGod’s Creaturesfrom A24.

“Working with Oliver, Ben, Paul and Josh is an immense privilege,” said producerAndrew Kortschak. “We are all struck by Ben’s beautiful and resonant short story, exploring love, loss and memory. We are beyond excited to adapt this story for the screen with this incredible team.”

Kortschak produces the film for End Cue alongsideLisa CiuffettiandAndrea Roa. Production is expected to begin sometime in the summer of 2022 in the United States, as well as on location in the United Kingdom and Italy.
