In yet another reminder of just how popular Disney’sLilo & Stitchremake has been, the movie has now overtaken one of the MCU’s most enduring blockbusters at the domestic box office.Lilo & Stitchhas generated over $400 million domestically and more than $970 million worldwide; it’son track to hit the coveted $1 billion markat the global box office, but it’s touch and go at the moment. Disney has held back on releasing the film on home video, which is certainly helping it hang tight theatrically, despite massive competition fromHow to Train Your DragonandJurassic World Rebirth.
Lilo & Stitch’s $408.6 million domestic haul puts it ahead ofCaptain America: Civil War’s $408 million lifetime haul from 2016. Perceived as a proxy follow-up toThe AvengersandAvengers: Age of Ultron,Civil Warunited most of the MCU’s roster in one rip-roaring adventure, and introducedTom Hollandas Spider-Man. It generated over $1 billion globally, and earned excellent reviews, with itsRotten Tomatoesrating currently sitting pretty at 90%.Civil Warwas directed byJoe and Anthony Russo, who’d previously made the very successfulCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, and would go on to directAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame. They’re currently working on the fifth and sixth Avengers movies.
Civil Warwas the final “solo” Captain America movie to starChris Evansin the lead role. He retired as the character afterEndgame, which debuted in 2019 and grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide. The franchise continued this year withCaptain America: Brave New World, which grossed roughly $600 million less globally thanCivil War, and earned significantly worse reviews. It was headlined byAnthony Mackie, withHarrison Fordplaying a prominent supporting role.Brave New Worldhad all but concluded its run beforeLilo & Stitchdebuted to massive numbers in May.
A ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake Has Been Announced
Themovie opened to mostly positive reviews, but received a massive wave of support from the audiences. It holds a terrific 92% audience score onRotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, “Recapturing the adorable charm of the original if not quite matching its rambunctious sense of imagination,Lilo & Stitchemerges out of the crate as one of the better live-action remakes of a Disney classic.” Directed byDean Fleischer Camp, the movie is playing in theaters, anda sequel has been announced.
