Two weeks into its excellent box office run, Disney’s live-action remake ofLilo & Stitchhas passed a massive milestone. The movie is allset to enter the coveted $1 billion club at the global box office, following a record-breaking debut over the Memorial Day weekend.Lilo & Stitchis riding a wave of positive audience response and has now overtaken a trio of titles from some of history’s biggest movie franchises. It’s also expected to top the domestic charts for the third time in a row this weekend, despite fresh competition in the form ofFrom the World of John Wick: Ballerina.
With an estimated $9 million on its third Friday of release,Lilo & Stitchhopped past the $300 million markat the domestic box office. In doing so, the film overtookThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, andThe Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Combined, the three movies have grossed over $900 million at the domestic box office. Each of these movies had its share of fan support, as doesLilo & Stitch, which has proven especially popular among millennials who watched the original animated film as children.

While the firstHobbitmovie opened to mediocre reviews, and the third Twilight film was greeted with a customary shrug from critics, the sixth Harry Potter blockbuster was positively received. It continues to hold a “certified fresh” 83%Rotten Tomatoes score, with the great criticRoger Ebertnoting the franchise’s increasingly dark tone.
