The film turned in $213 million at the box office against a $72 million budget, and it also earned scores of 76% from critics and 85% from audiences on the aggregate siteRotten Tomatoes.

Braveheartwon five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Gibson), Best Cinematography (John Toll), Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Makeup. It marked only the second time that Gibson stepped behind the camera to direct a film after making his directorial debut two years earlier inThe Man Without a Face, a drama that he also starred in alongsideNick Stahl. During an interview last month with The Scottish Sun, Gibson spoke about how his inexperience came into play on the set ofBraveheart,admitting that he “pretended”to know what he was doing. This was due to there being“3,000 people on set”who are“all looking at you like you know what you’re doing.”He continued on by speaking about how “proud” he is that the crew was able to avoid any major injuries, with“a hangnail, a broken nose, and a twisted ankle”the worst to come from the film.
