It’s been two decades sinceStar Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sithpremiered, and although Padmé Amidala’s fate seemed sealed in the tragic conclusion of the prequel trilogyNatalie Portmanhas a bold idea for a comeback — and it involves a lightsaber. Appearing onThe One Showthis week to promote her new filmFountain of Youth, Portman was asked whether she’d ever considerreturning to the galaxy far, far away, despite Padmé’s dramatic death in childbirth at the end ofRevenge of the Sith. Without hesitation, Portman lit up with a pitch fans won’t soon forget: bring her back as a Jedi.

“With a lightsaber. I think she’d have to be a Jedi. If somehow she were brought back from the dead, that would be exciting.”

While there are no official plans for Padmé to reappear in theStar Warsuniverse (that we know of) the idea of her wielding the Force in a future project is the kind of unexpected twist that could send fan speculation into hyperspace. Especially now that theStar Warscanon has embraced cloning, spiritual rebirths, and Force ghosts, it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility. Somehow, Padmé returned.

What Else Is Natalie Portman Making?

OnThe One Show, Portman also reflected on her new project,Fountain of Youth, aGuy Ritchieadventure filmthat gave her the kind of thrills she never had growing up.

“I had no adventure growing up,” Portman said. “We were going to the library. We were like, ‘Let’s go to the local museum. Let’s stay home and read a book.’ I had no fear-based growing up that I had to veer from. I want a lot of adventure because I grew up with a very calm household.”

Now in her 40s, Portman continues to balance roles in prestige dramas and big-budget spectacles. But her comments about returning toStar Warssuggest she still has unfinished business with the franchise that helped launch her into global superstardom.

With upcomingStar Warsprojects likeStarfighter,The Mandalorian & Grogu,Dawn of the Jedi, and future entries from directors likeJames MangoldandDave Filonion the horizon, it’s never been a better time for Lucasfilm to surprise audiences with a familiar face — or lightsaber-wielding ghost — from the past.
