The excitement just keeps on coming for fans ofHeidi Thomas’Call the Midwife, with the series of recent major announcements for the beloved drama about themidwives and nuns of Nonnatus Housemoving to another level, as confirmed viaRadio Times. The upcoming 2025 Christmas special and subsequent Season 15,which wererecently confirmed to be in production, have officially received a synopsis that boasts an international trip for the Poplar people, the embracing of the progression of women’s rights in the early 1970s, and the continuation of the series' vital discussion of the realities of childbirth.

“When senior members of the Nonnatus House staff head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission, the younger midwives are left to cope alone,” the synopsis begins, bringing the first piece of exciting information with the news thatthe staff are heading to Hong Kong, marking an enticing new journey for the series. “As the Christmas action shifts between the sun-drenched Far East and a snowy East End, Sister Julienne suddenly finds herself excited about the Order’s future,” the synopsis continues. “After years of battling change, she decides to embrace it, work with it, and see what love can do.” It seems this is the plot of the Christmas special, with the synopsis carrying on into the fifteenth season, scheduled to air in 2026. “This change of energy reverberates throughout series 15. The new series kicks off in 1971 with several of the ladies embracing Women’s Lib and burning their bras outside Nonnatus House. As the year unfolds, we see the team handle cases including premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis and slavery.”

A ‘Call the Midwife’ Spin-Off Series and a Feature Film Are On the Way

Whilst Call the Midwife fans patiently wait for Season 15 and the upcoming Christmas special to be delivered, an official announcement has been made tosend the franchise to an entirely new level. Led by executive producers Thomas,Pippa Harris, andAnn Tricklebank,it has been confirmed that, not only is aprequel series set during the Second World War on its way, but afeature-length film about the Poplar crew is also in development, as well as confirmation coming that Season 16 is also in the works. The film, reported to be following the stars of the current series on an international trip, likely to the aforementioned Hong Kong, is perhaps the most exciting of these announcements, with it high time that the staff of Nonnatus House got a bigger-budget adventure made for the big screen.
