2025 is shaping up to be an important year forNick Kroll. The two-time Emmy nominee is bidding farewell to his semi-autobiographical animated hitBig Mouthwith itseighth and final season on May 23, and, on July 18, he’ll be part of the cast for the big-screen return of theSmurfsin theRihanna-led animated movie fromPam Brady. Between those two projects, however, his SXSW 2024 comedy horror flickI Don’t Understand Youwill finally make its way to theaters on June 6, and we’re excited to include the film as part ofCollider’s Exclusive Previewevent for summer movies. We can share a new image that centers on the two main characters of the story, played by Kroll and Broadway starAndrew Rannells, who look anything but chill during what appears to be a dinner date.
I Don’t Understand Youstars Kroll and Rannells as Dom and Cole, a wealthy couple who are oh so close to adopting a baby and taking the next big step in their lives. To celebrate their tenth anniversary and reconnect with each other before the latest addition to their family arrives, theybook an Italian vacationdesigned to be a picture-perfect encapsulation of the luxuries Europe has to offer. However, the trip slowly morphs into a nightmareas things go off the rails one after another. It starts with the couple getting lost on their way to dinner before their car gets stuck in a ditch in the middle of nowhere amid a torrential downpour. Suddenly, their years ofbeing catered to as rich Americanscome back to bite them as they navigate a rural area in a foreign country with no cell service, zero grasp of the Italian language, and an ever-looming turmoil that threatens to explode as they begin to fear for their lives. All of that explains how they’re so shaken in our exclusive still, with Kroll’s Dom crouched down and panicked while Rannells’s Cole brandishes a knife beside him.

The pair’s roles as a gay couple reunite them after years of playing onBig Mouthtogether. While Kroll takes up the lead role in the series, Rannellshas been a recurring presenceas the flamboyant gossip Matthew MacDell since the raunchy comedy premiered in 2017. They’ve shared a hormone monster before, and now, they’ll get to share the lead alongside a strong supporting cast inI Don’t Understand You, includingMorgan Spector, Nunzia Schiano, Eleanora Romandini, Paolo Romano, andAmanda Seyfried. Kroll, in particular, had high praise for his co-stars' work, previously telling Collider’sPerri Nemiroffat SXSW about a scene where theBook of MormonstarchanneledThe Shiningwith his dark and dramatic performance:
“We watched the premiere last night and watching Andrew and Eleonora do this really fun scene near the end, this sort of chase scene. That was like the one scene Andrew and I were not in together so I just got to watch that purely as a viewer. [It] was so fun. It was like genuinely exciting and dramatic and also weird and funny and dark, and Andrew all of a sudden is in The Shining. So watching them play that scene as just an observer was a real pleasure to watch.”

Who Is Behind ‘I Don’t Understand You’?
David Joseph CraigandBrian William Cranoshared writing and directorial duties for the comedy horror. For the former,I Don’t Understand Youwas his feature debut, letting him work alongside someone who had directed him before. One of Craig’s most notable roles came in the starryPermission, helmed by Crano and also featuring Spector alongsideRebecca Hall,Dan Stevens,Gina Gershon, andJason Sudeikisamong its cast. On a more personal level, though, the two are life partners, which meantthey had complete trust in each other while making the project. “The best thing about working with your partner is you can trust them to save you when you don’t have a great idea, or you just feel ill or something, and you’re like, ‘It’s five in the morning. This is your scene. You do it.’ [Laughs] But having that shared trust is the best thing,” Crano told Nemiroff. They also had a talented team backing them up, including producersJoel Edgerton, Nash Edgerton, Kara Durrett, Jessamine Burgum, andJonathan Glickman, alongside executive producersToby Nalbandian, Gregory Schmidt, Will Greenfield, Ben Shafer, Giovanni Pompili, andLara Costa Calzado.
Their first feature film as partners in the director’s chair will look to test their skills and trust in each other when it hits theaters onJune 6.
