Quentin Tarantino’s next film,Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is about, well, Hollywood, so it’s only appropriate that the marketing for the film leans into the self-reflexive nature of the 1969-set film.Leonardo DiCaprioleads the cast as Rick Dalton, a mildly famous TV actor who’s having trouble transitioning into movies. In a new poster released forOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, we actually get a look at a poster for a moviewithinthe movie, the Rick Dalton vehicleOperazione Dyn-O-Mite!. It looks incredibly silly and completely believable.
This is the first of what I hope are many marketing materials that offer a look into the world ofOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, which co-starsBrad Pittas Dalton’s easy-going stunt man Cliff. We know that Tarantino is a fan of loading his films up with in-universe Easter Eggs, like Red Apple cigarettes that appear in multiple Tarantino films or even references to characters from different films. WithOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino gets to create his own little fictional Hollywood universe, and the poster forOperazione Dyn-O-Mite!is but one little peek into that world. It also must be said that the poster for the fake movie is better thanthe poster for the actual movie…
