Hall, was a mainstay on Showtime for eight years, but as great as it was,it was criticized for not being able to stick the landing, with a divisive series finale. To correct that, our favorite serial killer returned in 2021 withDexter: New Blood. After mostly earning praise,it again botched the ending. That could have been it for good, but at the end of 2024, Dexter came back again, this time by going back in time.

So what’s next for Dexter Morgan?
What Will Happen Next at Miami Dade?
Every season ofDexterhas to havea main villain arc. ForDexter: Original Sin, it isPatrick Dempsey’s Aaron Spencer, a man who completely loses his mind due to his inability to let go that his wife left him for another man, along with the realization that the boy he thought was his son isn’t actually his. He abducts one child and kills him, before turning on his own. Dexter is able to catch Aaron and take him out (along with making him the first killer he disposes of in the bay), while saving his son, but there is one major problem: Aaron Spencer was Miami Dade’s homicide division captain.
If we get a second season, how much time will it spend on what Aaron did, along with looking for him, since he’s presumed to be on the run? With him gone, this will allowMaria LaGuerta(Christina Milian) to rise up the ranks. She was already getting closer to finding out what was going on with Harry Morgan and Brian Moser (Roby Attal), soHarry and Dexter are going to need to be more careful. Look for Angel Batisa (James Martinez) to have a larger role, but if you’re excited to meet Sgt. Doakes, don’t get your hopes up.Dexter: Original Sinis set in the early ’90s and Doakes doesn’t join the force until years later.One character we could meet is Thomas Matthews, who was played byGeoff Piersonin the original series. WhenDexterbegan, he was the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide, so will we be introduced to him now?
The biggest question here ishow involved does Debra Morgan become? The first season saw Debra as a young woman in turmoil, trying to process the death of her mother, along with the fact that her father and brother rarely include her. She goes through a lot, from a bad boyfriend to getting into a fight that nearly gets her kicked out of her choice of college. However, at the end of the season, she decides to work for Miami Dade, just like her dad and her newly hired brother. Will a second season see her in the academy or working in homicide with her family, complicating Dexter’s side hobby and his dad’s guidance?
This ‘Dexter’ Pair Should’ve Ended Up Together
The series could have gone in a wildly different direction.
Aaron Spencer was the big bad of the first season, but Patrick Dempsey is not coming back to kill again. He also wasn’t the most challenging of targets Dexter will ever see, so a second season ofDexter: Original Sinwill probably step it up tomake the next killer more of a threat to Dex. Who will it be?There’s the possibility of the introduction of the Trinity Killer, made famous byJohn Lithgow.With a prequel series centered around Trinityin progress, will we first meet him as a killer in a second season ofDexter: Original Sin?
It’ll most likely be someone new.Dexter’s brother,Brian, is out there, but the series is limited by what they can do with him. The siblings don’t meet until the original Michael C. Hall series, and they can’t change that. The first season ofOriginal Sindid introduce us to him, showing us his own origin story, along with a showdown with Harry. Dexter’s father seemed to get through to Brian, telling him that he was giving Dex the best life possible, but with the final scene showing Brian watching his brother and family dancing happily, we know he’s not gone. How involved will he be, and will Harry have to encounter him yet again?

Will Harry Morgan Make It Out Alive?
There are only so many twists and turns you’re able to have with a prequel series.We know Dexter and Debra are always going to make it out alive, but not Harry. He is an integral part ofOriginal Sinas the man who takes Dexter in, but also gives him a code to follow when he can’t control his killer urges. He quickly accepts Dex for who he is, and his son has no problem confiding in him about his crimes. It’s easy to see why the Michael C. Hall series still has Dex speaking to his father long after he passed.
We know Harry dies at some point. It was originally explained that he died of a heart attack, and later revealed that he overdosed after walking in on one of Dexter’s murders.Original Sincould play with that and change it to fit their narrative. The first season ofOriginal Sinhad Harry dancing with his kids in the end, making fans wonder if he was going to have a heart attack right in front of them. The show made the right decision tokeep Christian Slater’s character around, but how long will he last?Can we have another full season with him, or must he dieso that Dexter has to face his dark passenger on his own?
A second season ofDexter: Original Sinisn’t guaranteed, but the creator and cast are hopeful. Patrick Gibson toldYahoothat he’d love to return, and showrunner Clyde Phillips said:
“I’m curious to see him start to become a little bit more confident with his methods [and] take bigger swings, but that also might come with harder lessons. I think the stakes just get higher and higher with this show, naturally, and so that’s been really interesting to see. And also some characters that we haven’t got to meet yet from the original would be cool.”
IfDexter: Original Sindoes return, look for an even darker Dex who finds himself in a lot more trouble. The biggest unanswered question of all is,will we get to see it?
