Erotic movies are tricky to get right. They have to tread a fine line between provocative and believable,tasteful and titillating. It’s a balance that many movies fail to get right. Indeed, some erotic films fall so short of their ambitions that they have become infamous. With poor scripts and wooden performances,their attempts at steamy scenes instead cause unintended laughter- or, worst still, outright discomfort. With this in mind, this list considers the very worst of erotic cinema....

Villains are great and all, driving conflict in a way only they can and giving more noble characters something to resist or fight against. A great bad guy (or gal) will often steal the show, but just as valuable is a heroic character for the audience to root for. If the villain’s great enough, the hero can admittedly be just about anyone, but if an equally compelling hero is placed against them, movie magic often ensues....

In a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studios PresidentSteve Asbelltalked about the studio’s recent and popular movies, and upcoming titles such as the sequels forFree Guy,Avatar, andPlanet of the Apes. Hulu has released the first set of images for its adaptation ofJoseph Heller’s excellent satirical novel,Catch-22. The 6-episode limited series will be directed byGeorge Clooney,Grant Heslov, andEllen Kuras(each doing 2 episodes), all of whom are also producing.Luke DaviesandDavid Michôdare co-writers and executive producers. It’s been a long time since I readCatch-22, which is typically required reading in the high school cannon of literary works, but I absolutely loved it. The sharp, fragmented style creates a dreamy and sometimes nightmarish discombobulation....

One of the many things to world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival wasState of the Union. The ten episode series, written byNick Hornbyand directed byStephen Frears, takes place in a British pub in the ten minutes before a married couple (played byChris O’DowdandRosamund Pike) goes into their therapy session across the street. Over the course of the series, we learn what drew them together, how they ended up in therapy, and if they will be able to work out their differences....
