Spoilers ahead forSpider-Man: Far From Home. One of my favorite things aboutSpider-Man: HomecomingandSpider-Man: Far From Homeis that they’re very much about our current era. InHomecoming, the villain, Adrian Toomes aka Vulture (Michael Keaton), is an entitled white guy who’s motivated by resentment. He sees a wealthy elite like Tony Stark who has screwed him over, and Toomes feels like that’s a license to steal and hurt others. It’s the kind of white, working-class rage where you’re not really oppressed but you still feel screwed over by the system, so you agree to blow up the system because your own self-interest overrides the well-being of others....

A lot of odd and surprisingly entertaining things happen around Red Nose Day, which refers to a celebrity-packed campaign, fronted largely by NBC, to raise funds to help get kids out of poverty. This year, the release that has been given the most attention is theLove Actuallyreunion that has been trumpeted for something like a year at this point, which featuresHugh Grant,Andrew Lincoln,Liam Neeson,Keira Knightley, and much of the rest of the cast....

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for the upcomingThe Baby-Sitters Clubreboot, along with the premiere date for the series. This new adaptation hails from showrunnerRachel Shukert(Glow) and directorLucia Aniello(Broad City), but even this brief teaser confirms this new adaptation will still remain close to the source material—and indeed close to the original film and TV series as well. While only a teaser, we see that the landline does still play a role in this new series, even though it takes place in present day when most pre-teens don’t even know what a landline is....

If you watchThe Good Place—one of the best shows on TV right now—then you’re aware that creatorMichael Schur’s serialized comedy is jam-packed with all kinds of jokes, callbacks, and visual gags. Despite the fact that it’s a half-hour sitcom, this is still a show with the mythological complexity ofLOST, and the writers have a lot of fun filling the world with as many Easter eggs as possible. A perfect example is the many names of the restaurants in “The Good Place” in the show’s first season....

The best thing I can say about Illumination Entertainment movies at this point is that I know what to expect. The films never rise above mediocrity, they’re rarely clever or insightful, but they’re colorful, rely heavily on slapstick, and kids love them. Their latest film,Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, is no different. Illumination knows their brand at this point, and that brand is relying heavily on comedy with a smidge of sentiment tossed in for resolution....

This November, acclaimed directorSebastián Lelio, known for films such asDisobedienceandA Fantastic Woman, returns with his latest project for Netflix. Led byFlorence Pugh,The Wonderbrings viewers into the relationship between a young girl and the nurse tasked to watch over her. Ahead of the release, Netflix has shared the official trailer. With muted colors and a voiceover detailing a cryptic task, the trailer immediately signals to viewers that something is a bit off....

If there have been any defining TV trends of the last several years, it’s the resurgence of miniseries (now branded as a limited or anthology series), and an overabundance of remakes —Rush Hour,MacGyver,Lethal Weapon,The X-Files, andFuller Houseto name but a few. To be sure, TV has always featured ill-advised series based on movies and older TV, but reboots and remakes have truly defined the premiere seasons of the last few years, and will likely do so for the next few to come....
