IMAX has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette forAvengers: Infinity Warthat reveals why seeing the film in IMAX makes a difference. Now, IMAX presentation can offer a great benefit to audiences, but there are different kinds of IMAX movies. There are films likeDunkirkwhere directorChristopher Nolanshot the film specifically with the IMAX aspect ratio in mind, using IMAX cameras to capture pristine quality images. Then there are IMAX movies likeJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which weren’t shot with IMAX cameras or even necessarily with IMAX framing in mind, but have been re-formatted to fit IMAX screens.

This means that with movies that are converted to IMAX, likeJumanji, you may get to see a bigger image but it’s not necessarily the image the director and cinematographer had in mind when they were framing the shot. But with something likeDunkirk, the image you see in IMAX was crafted by Nolan and his cinematographer—it’s purposeful framing, as opposed to just showing a bit more of the image.

Which brings us toAvengers: Infinity War. Almost every Marvel Studios movie is presented in IMAX, but few are actually shot with IMAX cameras. ForInfinity Warand the untitledAvengers 4, directorsJoeandAnthony Russogot to use the brand new IMAX/Arri 2d cameras for the entirety of the shoot. That makesInfinity Warthe first movie shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras, and so when you see the film in IMAX screens, you’re getting an image that was created specifically for that format from start to finish.

As explained in the featurette below,Infinity Warfeatures some massive characters like Thanos (Josh Brolin), and thus traditional framing makes it hard to get the scale of the characters across. So if you seeInfinity Warin IMAX, you’ll get a larger frame that, according to the directors themselves, offers a better image.
