Warner Bros. has unveiled a new IMAX trailer for the upcoming blockbuster adventureThe Legend of Tarzan. The film starsAlexander Skarsgardas the titular man of the jungle withMargot Robbieplaying his beloved Jane. In this new iteration, Tarzan has become domesticated and lives in London, but is called back to his jungle home when he becomes a pawn in the game of the dastardly Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz).
This new trailer is mostly made up of footage that reveals the origin story of Tarzan, with a quiet and patient sequence showing how the orphaned Tarzan was taken in by the apes and raised as one of their own. Word onLegend of Tarzanhas been incredibly quiet for a blockbuster of this scale, and indeed the main draw here for me personally is directorDavid Yates. As the filmmaker behind the final fourHarry Potterfilms, this is his first non-Pottermajor motion picture, andTarzanis something of a passion project for the filmmaker as he was trying to get it off the groundfor yearsbefore WB finally gave it the greenlight. Curiously enough,The Legend of Tarzanis one oftwoDavid Yates films we’ll be getting in 2016, as he also helmed the highly anticipatedPotterspinoffFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
20th Century Fox’s newPlanet of the Apesfilms have set an impossibly high bar when it comes to CG apes, so Yates and Co. have their work cut out for them when it comes to the visual effects. And since folks are already pretty well acquainted with theTarzanstory as well as the ol’ “Christoph Waltz as a dastardly villain” cliché, it’s going to come down to Yates’ vision and the script byAdam CozadandCraig Brewer.
