Movies are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. There are times when you’ll walk into what ends up being a masterpiece of cinema. And then there are times when you’ll walk into a film wondering who signed off on filming it. When movie lovers watch a bad movie on screen, they normally turn to two sites to vent their frustrations: Rotten Tomatoes and Reddit. We mined the pages of the latter to find the most disappointing movies of 2021. Grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy this list of mediocrity.
Every ‘Transformers’ Movie, Ranked From Downright Awful to Pretty Decent
Directed byAntione Fuqua,Infinitewas supposed to be a hit for theaters. However, when the pandemic hit, the film was pushed back to June 2021, and was released on the relatively-new Paramount Plus streaming service. Viewers didn’t take kindly to the film, holding only a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and getting slammed on Reddit, with users pointing out the building of the betrayal plot that never came to fruition, andMark Wahlberg’sacting in general. It wasn’t all bad, as one user,u/Lallo-the-Long, called it “the best bad movie of 2021.”
Space Jam 2
To say Reddit critics didn’t take too kindly toSpace Jam 2is an understatement. One would be hard-pressed to finally find a nary speck of positivity within the mountains of bad reviews for a sequel no one really asked for; from users using the classic critiques of “cheesy and lame,” to expletives that are too graphic for this site to publish. Reddit’s hate forSpace Jam 2was validated - to a degree - by the creator of Netflix’s much more popularSquid Game, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, who,in responding to a critiqueof the ending by Space Jam starLeBron James, replied “Have you seenSpace Jam 2?”
Wonder Woman 84
In technicality,Wonder Woman 84came out in late 2020; however, most got their first view of the second film within the Wonder Woman universe in 2021, and many were not pleased. Many users threw cold water on Diana’s relationship with Steve and how the romance was a warped version of morality (Diana couldn’t let go of Steve, even though his spirit was in a random guy’s body, which was a whole other issue entirely). It made for anethical messof a movie, one that users simply couldn’t get past.

Dynasty Warriors
This was a Netflix film users were hyped to see, and what they got fromDynasty Warriorswas a film reeking with conviction and disappointment. Many Reddit userspanned the filmfor its cheesy nature, funny moments that were meant to be serious, and Guan Yu’s beard, which users derided as being “too [expletive] lame to look anywhere near the God of War himself,” Deadeye117 proclaimed. Yes, Guan Yu’s beard (and casting in general) was one of the biggest complaints aboutDynasty Warriors. Note to other studios: If you want to make aDynasty Warriorsmovie, ensure Guan Yu’s beard matches that of a God of War.
Army of the Dead
This NetflixDawn of the Dead-meets-Ocean’s 11film was highly promoted; but once it was released, many scratched their heads at the finished product. In fact, many thought the opening montage of the film was the best part of the movie, and after that, it went downhill from there. It was so disappointing that users were making lists of whatArmy of the Deadgot wrong. There was also much hate directed toward Geeta, in which one user,IsHaplo, summed up the feelings of Reddit critics toward the character: “[expletive] Getta.”
Duneis one of those films that you have to have an understanding of lore to see and appreciate its sweeping plot. While many applauded the film for its grade scale and beautiful landscapes, many on Reddit felt that the ending was a bit “anticlimactic” for their taste, even though the ending title card clearly statedDune: Chapter One. Users alsobemoaned the long runtime, which was made even longer when a majority of the film was basically world-building and character development for the second film in the upstart franchise.

Tom and Jerry
For those who mine the Reddit posts on a daily basis, one can come away thinking that Reddit movie critics are not fond of kid movies trying to be “hip.” That was the pervasive feeling of theTom and Jerrylive-action film, with the movie cramming in modern-day “hip” references to the point of being cringing. Granted, many didn’t go intoTom and Jerrywith high-hopes to begin with (it is a film geared toward kids, after all), but the “hip” references got to be too much for Reddit critics. One post stands out, in which a user, r/FellowKids, took a screenshot of Tom doing the “Floss dance.” The very next commenter,Snoo-84344, summed up the feeling among Reddit critics - “Oh God, why?”
Cosmic Sin
Type in “Cosmic Sin” in the search bar, and the second post thread that comes up is from r/scifi, with the topic outline, “Avoid Cosmic Sin on Netflix.” This critic is the embodiment of many who went into the Netflix sci-fi movie hoping for an interesting action film, especially one that starredBruce Willis. Instead, what they got was a disappointment, if they were awake for the entire film. One user who commented couldn’t wrap their head around how bad the film turned out to be. Enjoy the following quote from Relevant Neanderthal: “I’m someone with a very low bar. I love sci-fi and I’ll really let them get away with a lot. But holy [expletive], this was really [expletive] bad.”
The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It
A lot of Reddit critics really missed the touch that directorJames Wanbrought toThe Conjuringseries. Spoiler alert, he didn’t directThe Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, and from the perspective of Reddit, the film suffered from it. The scares were predictable, the film, according to StevenZissouniverse, went really hard in the “Warrens as Christian superheroes” plotline, and how, in their eyes, the moviemisrepresented the Arne Johnsoncase “so throughly,” according to r/lastpodcastontheleft.The Conjuring 3was one of the most hyped movies of the Summer and turned out to be an utter disappointment.
There is a segment that really likedCruella, given that the film was done in a tasteful and decent way that stayed true to one of Disney’s more infamous villains. Then there is a segment that brought into the hype and was disappointed at the end results. Some users thoughtCruellawastrying too hardto recapture the magic that Maleficent brought the bog screen and failed horribly at doing so. Other users didn’t care too much for the CGI Dalmations, and the film’s runtime, which was at least 20 minutes longer than it had to be.
