Étoileis a new show from Prime Videothat puts fans in the high stakes world of ballet. Centered around two highly respected ballet companies, the series unpacks the struggles of a post-COVID return to the theater and the desperate attempt to keep art, like ballet, alive and thriving. One of the two leads of the series isCharlotte Gainsbourg, a reknown actress who is known for more dramatic work. But she’s excited toshow people in the United States her comedic side.
During an interview withVogue, Gainsbourg spoke about how audiences see her as a “dramatic” actress but that she enjoys doing comedies. “People here see me only as a dramatic actress, but I was always looking for comedies as much as I could,” she said. Gainsbourg is known in the States for her work inLars von Trierfilms likeMelancholiaandNymphomaniac.“I enjoyed doing comedy in France. I’m not always serious.I like to have fun and laugh!”
She went on to talk a bit about how she was able to add layers to her character, Geneviève. She is a woman in charge of Opéra national de Paris in France and is working withLuke Kirby’s character Jack on aswap of talent to keep both institutions alive and thriving. “I love the way I was able to hide the depressed side of my character with her high heels and then [become] a little more authentic when my character is by herself,” Gainsbourg told the outlet. “This duality was fun to play because it’s going to those extremes.”
Colorful Language and Some Zingers From Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino
The show itself is another collaboration betweenAmy Sherman-Palladinoand her husband,Dan Palladino. The two recently wrappedThe Marvelous Mrs. Maiselfor Prime Video and are now collaborating with Kirby once more after his turn as Lenny Bruce on the previous series. WithÉtoile,we get to see a more adult take on the ballet world than Sherman-Palladino’sprevious seriesBunheadsand Gainsbourg talked aboutthe language her character gets to use in the show.
“The way Amy and Dan write is so funny, and once I discovered that it had to do with the pace and the rhythm and understanding the words they choose, I understood what I had to aim for. And to swear as much as I can, it was so fun!” The pace of a Sherman-Palladino project is infamous. Remember how fastGilmore Girlswas? But it is exciting to see a new take on ballet from the duo, and we can’t wait!
