Ryan Coogler’sSinnershas been a global sensation since its debut in theaters nearly a month ago, and one of the universally praised aspects of the film is its cast. With stars likeMichael B. Jordanin leading roles surrounded by supporting membersHailee Steinfeld,Delroy Lindo, andMiles Caton,Sinnersboasts one of the strongest ensembles of the year thus far that could easily be in the conversation at the 2026 Academy Awards. However, new information has come to light revealing that the cast could have looked a little different. Pop starHalseyrecently went on the In Your Dreams with Owen Thiele Podcast, and when asked if she’s seen the movie, she said no but also slyly revealed that she was considered for a part in the film:

“Not yet. I read the script though. I did read the script. There’s not a lot of white-passing Black girls in Hollywood. So I did read the script.”

Thiele also mentioned Hailee Steinfeld, and Halsey confirmed that it was her part of Mary that she was considered for in the film. However, she acknowledged thatSteinfeld’s casting “makes perfect sense,”and the two went on to praise the movie. Like most who did not keep up with the film’s marketing leading up to release, Thiele and Halsey weresurprised whenSinnersturns into a vampire movie, as the first act mostly presents as apowerful and important commentary on racial politicsin the early 1900s. Nonetheless, although Halsey didn’t end up with the part of Mary, it seems Coogler and casting directorFrancine Maislermade the right choice at every turn with theSinnerscast. The film has earned a nearly flawless score of 97% from critics onRotten Tomatoes, and even the audience-driven Popcornmeter lands at 96%. It has grossed over $200 million at the global box office.
