‘Starfleet Academy’ Made Tatiana Maslany a Trekkie
Being a fan of the source material before going into a project is not a requirement for an acting job. Maslany told Nemiroff that her husband,Brendan Hines, is a Trekkie, and that’s how she’d had exposure to the universe before signing ontoStarfleet Academy. She explained:
“It’s opened up to me the Star Trek Universe, which I knewThe Original Series, I’d seen some of the movies. My husband’s a big Trekkie, and so he and I watchedWrath of Khanand stuff like that during COVID, butnow I’m going back, and I’m watchingDeep Space Nine.My husband refers to it as my stories because I’ll be, like, sitting in the tub with my laptop, just like, ‘Oh! Oh no!’ And laughing. He’s like, it’s like my soaps. I love it so much.”

With Maslany’sexquisite taste in watchingDeep Space Nine, she explains, “It has something to say. It’s not a 1-to-1 about anything, but it talks about things in a way that you can feel this catharsis of watching shows that have a moral compass.” Maslany also apparently has a favorite character: “‘That guy’s a shapeshifter who literally becomes a liquid form and goes into a bucket every 16 hours, andhe’s my dream man, and I love him so much.’ It’s the best. It’s thebest.” The shapeshifter Maslany is referring to is, of course, Odo, played by the lateRené Auberjonois. Auberjonois played the orphanedChangeling, who was also Chief of Security on the Deep Space Nine space station across seven seasons.
