Audiences are once reuniting with Woody, Buzz, and the whole gang. Disney has announced thatToy Story 5, a new feature film as part of the beloved animated franchise, is in development.
The announcement of the upcoming fifth installment in the beloved Pixar series was made by Disney CEOBob Igerduring the company’s Q1 earnings call. Along with the news of a newToy Story, other animated franchises will also be receiving new entries withFrozen 3and a newZootopiafilm also being announced during the call. “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises,Toy Story,Frozen, andZootopia," said Iger during the earnings call. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
Each of the previous entries in these franchises saw major success both commercially and critically, withToy Story 4earning over $1.07 billion at the global box office and went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards in 2020 for Best Original Song “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” byRandy Newmanand won the Best Animated Feature. As for the other films involved in the announcement,Frozen 2received an Academy Award nomination in 2020 for Best Original Song with “Into the Unknown” and earned $1.45 billion at the global box office. As for the 2013 original film, it went on to two Academy Awards including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song with “Let It Go.”Zootopiaearned $1.02 billion and won Best Animated Feature at the 2017 Academy Awards.
