With the exception of one switcheroo, we have the same Top 10 placements from Friday after the weekend box office totals have been tallied.James Wan’sThe Conjuring 2remains solidly on top with $40.4 million, nearly twice the total of the closest competitor. The bonafide horror hit is the best opening for a movie in this genre since Wan’s 2013 original film, which introducedVera FarmigaandPatrick Wilsonas the real-life-inspiredLorraine and Ed Warren. Positive reviews fromcriticsandmoviegoersalike helped boost the scary sequel into an easy first-place victory.
And while another newcomer,Duncan Jones’Warcraft, has taken an unexpected second place, its domestic totals for the weekend are closer to original estimates than the $27 million that Friday’s numbers suggested was possible. Some have pointed to the fact thatWarcraftearned less than the spectacular opening-weekend failure ofJohn Carter, but Disney’s bomb had a budget of almost an additional $100 million more. Plus, that film didn’t have the huge benefit of China’s box office, whereWarcrafthas now pillaged over $150 million in less than a week:

Elsewhere,Jon M. Chu’sNow You See Me 2conjured up a third spot, making the debuts go three for three. That’s more than $6 million less than the magical franchise’s first installment three years ago. Other notable achievements includeThe Angry Birds Movie, which has flown past $300 million globally thanks to strong international ticket sales. Disney fills out the Top 10 withAlice Through the Looking Glass,Captain America: Civil War, andThe Jungle Book. The latter two films are 2016’s first and third-biggest films of the year, with Disney’sZootopiataking second in that category. Not a bad year for the Mouse House, who still has a lot of movies in the hopper.
