James GunnandPeter Safranhave taken over the DCU and with the success ofSuperman, they’re clearly gearing up for big things! They have a lot on the upcoming slate, likePeacemakerSeason 2, which Gunn said was a “direct follow-up” toSupermanin a new interview withJosh Horowitzfor theHappy, Sad, Confusedpodcast. Gunn and Horowitz discussed the success of the film, creating a movie that felt authentic to Clark Kent, andrecasting the role withDavid Corenswetafter the DCEU’sHenry Cavillportrayal.

During their chat, Horowitz got some insight into the future of the DCU. AfterPeacemakercomesSupergirlwithMilly Alcockas Kara. Then there isLanterns,a series that is aTrue Detective-esque look at the Lantern Corps. But as Gunn continued to list the upcoming projects, Horowitz asked himabout some other beloved DC characterswho did, in the DCEU, have a chance to shine. One character was Wonder Womanwho was last seen inWonder Woman 1984played byGal Gadot. Gadot is not returning to the role, as far as we know, but Gunn did say that there is a script for her own film. “I’m very very excited about Wonder Woman right now.”

Some of the other characters in the Justice League that fans have been waiting for include Batman (that’s still happening eventually) and two other faves:The FlashandAquaman. If you were holding your breath for them, maybe…don’t. He did say that we would havea little wait before we saw characters like the Flash and Aquaman again. When Horowitz asked if we would see either of these characters in the “next few years,” Gunn responded with a bit of a smaller timeline. “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters.”

The DCU Is Growing

Gunn’s work with Safran is growing the franchise in a way that we haven’t seen before. The DCEU tried to give us a quick build-up of the team, but it does seem like Gunn and Safran learned from that mistake. They are slowing building out their universe with beloved characters and allowingsome lesser known DC charactersthe chance to make their live-action debut. So while Barry Allen and Arthur Curry might not be coming up right awayon the DCU docket, Gunn didn’t say it’d be a long time. So…in 2027, start asking again.
