Harper (Myha’la) has undergone significant changes throughout all three seasons of the HBO finance drama seriesIndustry. From a young, hungry junior analyst to a young, hungry venture outfit founder, she has undergone significant growth in the past few years. These changes are seen in how she carries herself, be it her dressing style or hairstyle. The latter has evolved over the years, sparking some theoriesthat these changes are integral to the character’s development. Myha’la has seen and heard those theories, and she thinks there is something to them. “I don’t want to give anything away, but what I can say is: all of y’all tracking the hair, you’re all right,” the actress recently said while this year’s Met Gala. While her statement does not explicitly confirm what Harper’s evolving hairstyle represents, chances are it will be addressed insubsequent seasonsof the show.
Harper showed up at Pierpoint on her first day with braided hair. Black women in corporate settings are under unseen pressure to appear “presentable,” which at times means styling their hair in an “acceptable” manner. The braids allowed Harper to blend into the majority male and white environment. Season 2 featured a slight change as she abandoned the braids for a straightened look held up by a bun at the back at some point. But as she gets more comfortable and life in financebecomes more complicated, she opts for a short pixie cut. These changes could have been chalked up to the actress’s decision, but they might have a narrative significance yet to be explored.
